Chocolate Chip Biscotti with Orange

An Italian spin on an American classic!

Legend has it that these delightful biscuits, like so many culinary treasures, were born almost by accident! The story goes that someone at MaMa Florence, perhaps making space in the kitchen, decided to toss a few unexpected ingredients into a simple cookie dough. Little did they know, they'd stumbled upon the magic of chocolate and orange – a pairing we now know is simply irresistible! If you love these biscotti, you might also be interested in our gelato and biscotti making classes at MaMa Florence, where we share more of these delicious stories and techniques!

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour 200 grams
  • Butter 100 grams
  • Brown Sugar 100 grams
  • 1 Egg
  • Chocolate Chips 100 grams
  • Yeast 1 teaspoon
  • 1 pinch of Salt
  • Orange Zest, as needed

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven at 180°C
  2. Mix softened butter with sugar until creamy.
  3. Add egg and mix well
  4. Slowly add flour, yeast, the lemon zest and a pinch of salt. Mix thoroughly
  5. Add the chocolate chips and mix well so they are well distributed
  6. Make balls with the mixture and put them on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Slightly press down on the balls
  7. Bake in the oven for 10-12 minutes

Conclusion

These Chocolate Chip Biscotti with Orange offer a delightful crunch and a burst of citrus that perfectly complements the sweet chocolate. A happy accident, indeed! If you've enjoyed this taste of Tuscan baking, consider joining us at MaMa Florence for our gelato & biscotti making class, where you can learn more about these twice-baked delights and other traditional Italian treats. We might even share a few more "accidental" successes!

  1. Cooked it following along on a phone in a very small kitchen and never had to scroll back and forth. That matters more than people admit.

  2. Less sweet than the supermarket version and much better for it.

  3. There is one ingredient in here doing most of the work, and that is the one I would not substitute.

  4. Made it twice in one week. Once as written, once with a bit of citrus zest, which I preferred.
