All about TOMATO
Also known as “love apple”, the tomato is the undisputed leader of the Italian cuisine in August.
The word "tomato" comes from the Aztecan word tomatotl said to mean literally "the swelling fruit. The Italian name "pomodoro" - literally "golden apple" - was given in 1554 referring to the first variety of tomatoes, that had a yellow skin.
Whether datterino, cuore di bue (oxheart), Florentine, San Marzano or Pachino, tomatoes come in a huge range of varieties and are among the main ingredients of the Mediterranean Diet because they are rich in antioxidants and have a low calorie content compared to the quantity of vitamins and minerals. Avoid eating unripe tomatoes, either cooked or raw, as they contain lycopersicine, a toxic substance similar to solanine contained in potatoes.
Attend our vegetarian cooking class to learn how to prepare the perfect basil/tomato sauce for your spaghetti or the traditional Tuscan dish pappa col pomodoro (tomato/bread soup)!
Did you know that...
Tomatoes, even if commonly considered vegetables, botanically are a fruit.
MaMa's Tips and tricks
Tomatoes are not just healthy, but are also good as beauty treatments and for the house.
Rubbing your face twice a day with a tomato slice, helps fight pimples and treat minor burns. While a mixture of tomato juice and olive oil is a cure-all for your skin after a prolonged exposure to the sun.
In the house, rubbing half a tomato on brass removes spots and with tomato peels, aluminum pots are as good as new.
