ITALIAN WHITE WINES | Wine Tasting Class

ITALIAN WHITE WINES | VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO

The name of the grape variety, Vernaccia, almost certainly derives from the Latin vernaculus meaning of the house, home, place, or town, suggesting that the grape is indeed indigenous to the area. In 1966, Vernaccia di San Gimignano was the first white wine in Italy to be granted the prestigious DOC recognition. In 1990 it gained further importance by being assigned the DOCG recognition. In recent years the area has also shown an interesting potential for great red wines as well.

TASTING NOTES | VERNACCIA DI SAN GIMIGNANO

Brassy-yellow with greenish reflections and pale yellow-white rim. Delicate bouquet with a pleasant minerality and almonds notes. The palate is rich, intense with lemony and cedary flavor, and it works very well as an aperitif. It pairs very well with light vegetables or fish risotti, vegetable-based pasta dishes, and delicately-prepared white meat. But it is also worth the try with fried chicken and vegetables, grilled prawns and a typical Tuscan Panzanella salad, and will work very well with grilled or roasted fish. Serving suggestion 12-14°C (53-57°F).

Heading west, our white wine tasting class will go towards a biodynamic Gavi, then all the way down south to Campania for the hidden gem of Fiano.  We'll then cross the sea to reach the snow peaks of Mt. Etna in Sicily. In this Italian White Wine class, we have chosen five white wines that for one reason or another have made the difference in the history of Italian wine making. Today, thanks to many innovative and smart wine makers, some of the oldest wines in the world are back in the market!
