AN ITALIAN WINE JOURNEY | Wine Tasting Class

GREAT ITALIAN WINES | BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

Brunello is a Tuscan wine typical of Montalcino area. It was developed by Ferruccio Biondi Santi a little more than a century ago, and is produced exclusively from Sangioveto Grosso grapes, a Sangiovese clone. In 1980, Brunello di Montalcino was awarded the first Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita - DOCG designation and is one of Italy's most expensive wines. Brunello can be aged for a long time, kept in the right way: in a cool cellar at a constant temperature, in the dark and laid horizontally.

TASTING NOTES | BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO

A visibly limpid, brilliant wine, with a bright garnet colour. It has an intense perfume, persistent, ample and ethereal. Dry with a lengthy aromatic persistence, one can recognize scents of undergrowth, aromatic wood, berries, light vanilla and jam with an elegant harmonious body, vigorous and racy. It pairs perfectly with red meats, game – both feather and fur, possibly accompanied by mushrooms and truffles. It is also excellent with structured cheeses. The wine should be served at a temperature of 18°C-20°C (65-68° F) in ample shaped rounded crystal glasses.

Italy grows over 400 grape varieties and produces more than 20,000 labels of wine. How do you choose the best wines? How can you tell the grapes they are made from?  Where do they come from? "An Italian Wine Journey" wine class answers these questions. The adventure starts in the Northern lands of Piedmont and Veneto, continues in the magic Tuscan hills, across the Amalfi Coast and it ends on the volcanic Etna mountain in Sicily.
